Celebrate Earth Day by reading!

Earth day falls on Thursday, April 22 this year and there is so much to read here at the library about our big beautiful world!

Hands, World, Map, Global, Earth, Globe, Continents

If you want to introduce your child to the beauty of the natural world, try "Once Upon Another Time" by Charles Ghigna and Matt Forrest Esenwine. This picture book draws the connection between the wild and man-made, focusing on how humans have changed the landscape for the natural world and its inhabitants.

Despite recent controversy over some Dr. Seuss books that have been "cancelled", he still has some stories that teach children important and valuable lessons. One such book pertains to protecting the environment and was also adapted into a movie. This classic book (although long) is an interesting, creative way to explain the effects of environmental abuse on the natural world. You may have already guessed its called the Lorax. This book will keep your child engaged as they learn about habitat destruction and the effects of modernizing the landscape.

A more recent book called "Dear Earth...From Your Friends in Room 5" by Erin Dealey is a lovely story about students from an elementary classroom writing letters to Earth about their environmental efforts to preserve and save their planet. They send thoughtful letters back and forth discussing their plans with Earth, asking important questions, and getting answers directly from Earth about practical ways to save the planet. You could apply many of the same practices in your personal life and benefit the planet (and its inhabitants) too!
