I have been a fan of Jason Segel since I watched him in Freaks and Geeks. I have watched several of his movies and wanted to hear what he had to say. Of course he talked about his new book Nightmares, which I will write about later, but then he went on to talk about how he got into writing. He was between gigs and was worried that his acting career was over when Judd Apatow pulled him aside and helped him with his writing. He first wrote Nightmares as a script and it was bought but never made into a movie. In the meantime his acting/writing picked up and it was not until later that he teamed up with his writing partner Kirsten Miller to rewrite the script into a book. When he was asked about how he liked writing on a team as opposed to writing by himself he said he enjoyed it because he loves working with the best and bouncing ideas back and forth. His experience is script writing and Kirsten helped to fill out the scenes in this story.
What I took away from his talk is that you have a lot of fears and you have to live through them. That is what life is about. When asked how he deals with his fears he says he does 3 things
1. Be kind to people
2. Exercise
3. Work through it.
Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to meet him because I had to go to a meeting and the line was too long! But I am grateful I was able to listen to him speak.
Nightmares by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller
This is the first in a planned trilogy, the second is due out in September of this year.
Charlie Laird has to deal with coming to terms with the death of his mom and a new step-mom. On top of that he has to worry about his nightmares coming true. Can he save his town and learn to accept his life as it is?
